4 Reasons to Consider a Hair Transplant

Age brings incredible benefits — wisdom, experience, and a deeper sense of self. Yet, it also introduces changes that may not feel as welcome, like hair loss and wrinkles.

While hair loss doesn’t typically pose health risks, many people find that having a full head of hair enhances their appearance and boosts their self-esteem. Hair transplants have become a go-to solution, with over 703,182 procedures performed in 2021 alone.

Hair loss was once taboo, but we’re here to make it more approachable than ever. You might have considered hair transplants, and at Hair Doc, we’ve performed hundreds that have helped transform the lives of patients in Cow Hollow, San Francisco, and beyond. Look no further; we’re here to share four reasons you might consider a hair transplant.

1. Get full, natural-looking hair

Hair plugs are a look of the past. Advancements in technology and technique have allowed hair transplants to provide natural results without anyone even knowing you had work done — unless you tell them.

Hair transplants are one of the most impressive hair restoration methods because they provide the most dramatic results. On average, 4,000 hair grafts can be transplanted in a single session. While you’ll notice an improvement in the first session, some patients need three to get their desired results.

It’s important to understand that a hair transplant is a minimally invasive surgery that involves 1-2 weeks of recovery. We often suggest patients try medications like finasteride or minoxidil before opting for a hair transplant.

2. The results are permanent

A toupée can improve your hairline, but it’s a temporary solution that doesn’t actually restore your hair. Hair transplants provide permanent results with real hair for a natural, but younger-looking you.

Many patients who undergo a hair transplant never need to undergo another. It’s important to consider that your hair may still be prone to the aging process like thinning, as your follicles shrink as you age, but these follicles should remain and provide fuller results than if you hadn’t undergone surgery.

Your results depend on how well you care for your hair and live a healthy lifestyle like eating a healthy diet and refraining from smoking.

3. Treatment that’s tailored to you

Hair loss isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. What works for one person may not work for you. That’s why hair transplants can provide some of the best outcomes. Aaron Chen, MD, is a skilled doctor with expert techniques to give you life-changing results with minimal downtime.

Dr. Chen customizes your treatment for your pattern of hair loss to not only replenish your loss of hair but also to halt further loss from happening. He performs transplants in two ways.

Follicular unit transplant

Follicular unit transplants (FUT) accounted for 31.5% of hair transplants performed in 2021. In this method, Dr. Chen administers an aesthetic and removes a strip of hair and scalp, around .5 inches tall and 5-10 inches wide, and transplants the hair on areas where you’ve experienced balding. Over the next 3-6 months, your hair follicles will start to flourish with over 50% of hair regrowth, with results peaking around the one-year mark.

This method is generally better for those with greater hair loss because it allows for more efficient harvesting.

Follicular unit extraction

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) has become the most popular hair transplant method with over 62% of patients receiving this method. In the FUE, Dr. Chen removes small, circular pieces (.03 inch) across your scalp in areas where hair is robust. He then transplants them onto thinning areas like the crown, temples, and front of the head.

FUE is a better option for patients who wear their hair short as the scarring is minimal while the recovery time is faster.

4. Boost your confidence

85% of people struggle with low self-esteem, many of which are linked to looks. Do you look in the mirror only to see a balding hairline?

When you feel good about your looks, you improve your well-being and live happier. Confidence is also important for your career and relationships.

Hair transplants are a simple and effective way to feel better about yourself. Stop wondering what it’s like and call 415-907-7354 to schedule a consultation or book online.
