What’s the Best Treatment Approach for Male-Pattern Baldness in Early Adulthood?

You might have thought hair loss only happens to middle-aged people. But the reality is — it can happen at any age. Research shows that 30% of men experience hair loss before age 30.

As thinning and baldness start to take place, you’re probably looking for ways to get your hair back. Hair Doc, located in Cow Hollow, San Francisco, is your premiere hair restoration center with treatment options for every age and degree of hair loss. Here, we discuss some of the best treatments for people experiencing male-pattern baldness in early adulthood.

Why am I experiencing hair loss so young?

You might have a dad or uncle who you’ve noticed was balding. And even though they are much older than you, you probably wonder why it’s happening to you now.

Hair loss can happen as early as your teen years and can progress as you age. Everyone loses their hair at different times and for different reasons. Some of the most common reasons include:

Hair loss can be hard to endure, but we’re here to help. Read on to discover the best treatments to combat hair loss as a young adult.

How to replenish your hairline

You might not have realized how much you cherished your hair until you started losing it. Luckily, there are ways we can help you get it back.

Minoxidil

You’ve probably heard minoxidil called by its brand name, Rogaine. Rogaine is one of the longest-standing hair loss treatments, and for a good reason — it works. 92% of patients in a clinically controlled study deemed the treatment fair to excellent for stopping hair loss.

Rogaine works by enlarging your hair follicles and increasing the growth phase of your hair. This causes more strands to stay in the growth phase, ultimately allowing more hair to cover your scalp. Just apply the topical solution to your scalp twice a day and experience hair regrowth in as little as four months.

Rogaine is safe, easy, and affordable, making it a great option for patients from all income levels.

Finasteride

Finasteride, better known as Propecia®, is an oral medication available to patients since its FDA approval in 1997. It works by stopping testosterone from converting to DHT. Lowering your DHT levels causes slower hair loss and increased hair growth.

Finasteride is a prescription-only medication that is easy, affordable, and effective. It also has an excellent track record. 86% of patients reported it effectively stopped their hair loss, while 65% experienced a substantial regrowth.

Laser cap

The laser cap is a great option for patients who’d prefer not to take a medication. No drugs, chemicals, or unpleasant side effects are associated with the laser cap. The laser cap looks like a baseball cap from the outside, but underneath lies 80-304 laser diodes that stimulate dormant hair follicles in men or women.

Just wear the cap for 30 minutes every other day and regrow your hair while stopping future hair loss from occurring. This treatment is safe for men and women and must be used consistently for 4-6 months before seeing results.

We generally start them on these three less-invasive treatments for our young patients and monitor their results for several months. While most people see improvements, some prefer to explore other treatment options. Peter Panagotacos, MD, may suggest hair transplants and platelet-rich plasma therapy as good options to explore next.

Starting treatment early is key

You might not have realized how much you cherished your hair until you started losing it. Often, as we start to notice hair loss, it seems to happen far quicker than we’d like. Many people lose up to 50% of hair before they notice thinning.

The sooner you start treatment, the more likely you will experience hair regrowth. That’s why we suggest patients come in at the earliest signs of hair loss. If you’re reading this, here’s your sign to schedule an appointment with Dr. Panagotacos to start improving your hairline.
